Criminal Girls with 20 Pearls – Here is the Audit!

From The AP:

The audit of the Chicago-based Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, which was completed in December and provided to The Associated Press, also found two former top officials continued to use sorority credit cards after their service ended, failing to appropriately document tens of thousands of dollars in charges. A pending 2009 lawsuit against the organization and officials including its former president, Illinois resident Barbara McKinzie, contains similar allegations.

The audit by the Illinois-based accounting firm Ragland & Associates covers the year 2010 and is an annual audit paid for by the society. It finds that in that year McKinzie and two other top officials secretly created a second set of financial books to get around the sorority’s accounting policies.

The intent was to divert and misappropriate AKA funds,”according to the audit, which found nearly $1.7 million in payments made without authorization.

Approximately $282,000 in credit card charges on the second set of books appear to be fraudulent, including personal charges the sorority wasn’t reimbursed for, the audit found.

From Page 19 of audit:

AKA’s tax returns for years 2007 through 2009 are being audited by the Internal Revenue Service.  The audit is in process and is expected to be concluded sometime in January 2012.  The areas in which they are auditing are in the post Boule expenses, unrelated business income, regional directors office expenses (non-accountable plan expenses), set-aside income that has been authorized by the board, and travel and entertainment not supported with documents, including the American Express credit card expenses.”

Unbelievable! The criminal activity and financial malfeasance that you have been reporting on for YEARS has been plainly corroborated AGAIN. Financially, AKA has been run like the wild wild west! Not a spec of professionalism here, its hard to believe college-educated women are doing this. And the second set of books! Can you spell F-R-A-U-D! What is it going to take for the members to take the drastic action needed to clean up this mess? AKA will be on life support very soon. Even a blind woman can see that this organization needs to cease all normal operations (meetingS, membership intake, etc.)and immediately comply with all the recommendations in this report. The tax-exempt status of the organization is at serious risk, and it will be on life support very soon. I wonder how many members have read every word of this report, as they should. Unfortunately, the majority of the membership, particularly undergraduates, have shown by their inaction that they don’t care about any of this as long as they can still wear pink and green and have bragging rights about being an AKA. Well,I wouldn’t tell anybody I was in this org, I would hang my head in shame. Supposedly elite, educated women who have let their organization be run into the ground and are too apathetic to take control and clean it up, SMH. BAM and her cohorts cannot have any love for AKA after bringing it to ruin. It is a shame when non-members know more, and care more, about what is happening to your organization than the members do! Or maybe it is time for BGLOs to examine their relevance and perhaps go the way of the horse and buggy…just sayin

I live in Chicago and I’m a AKA. The mood here is just sickening. There are still loyal supporters who believe BAM is being framed. It kinda reminds me of the Jonestown tragedy. Folks have been brainwashed and bullied so much they don’t know what to believe. I first discovered the article online yesterday. I immediately sent it to ALL the AKA’s I know, young and old, financial and t-shirt wearers. My hope is that we stop talking about it in the dark and start discussing it openly like adults. I haven’t been active since 2008 and I plan to keep it that way. Meanwhile, young women are just happy to wear the colors, mature sorors are starting to ask questions which in my opinion is too little too late. The word around town is federal charges are pending. The IRS and State Attorney now have the case. I love my pink and green, but I’ll be a monkey’s uncle before I pay one more dime of my hard earned money to a bunch of wig wearing mobsters.

@AKA Shame- I know how you feel and I’m not even in Chicago. I feel that the main 2 reasons there are still loyal supporters of BAM and believe that she is being framed is due to the fact that some are still in denial and don’t want to believe that a “sister” would do such a thing even though the proof is written in black and white and has been mentioned for over 2 years now. The other reason is that it’s still not being discussed or brought up with some chapters. Some members only listen to what’s said at meetings. If one isn’t seeking knowledge then ignorance remains. Knowledge is power and ignorance ain’t bliss. Friends in other regions that I’ve shared information with didn’t even know that BAM was still on the scene. They’ve heard from other Sorors that everything was okay, believed BAM was gone and that the lawsuits have been either dropped or stopped. I refuse to be ignorant, hoodwinked and/or bamboozled and I share whatever news I learn. However, it’s up to the person who receives the news or information to believe, share with others who may not be aware and to take action. Unfortunately, this isn’t happening. Everything happens for a reason. The IRS is involved and I believe that this is the only way that this mess will get cleaned up. We just have to keep praying and keep the faith that justice and “clean house” is coming soon!!!

Anyone, particularly the membership, who cared to know EVERYTHING would have been able to find it here or on the FOTWI site for the last THREE years! Any ignorance is willing. What could the “framers” of BAM possible gain? The WI8 has been suspended and suffered nothing but persecution and aggravation for attempting to bring what was done in the dark into the dark. BAM supporters are just like Eddie Long supporters, they put the person above the sorority/church, no much how much evidence there is that their loyalty is misplaced. The organization needs a total housecleaning, regular activities should be suspended, particularly membership intake, until everything is in order. It is time for civil disobedience. Or AKA may cease to be.

FYI ladies. My ship sent me this today. There was a discussion on The Vine about the annual directorate meeting and from what I understand there’s now internal fighting. I’ve cut and pasted it as it was sent to me.

“REPORT FROM DIRECTORATE MEETING: Sorors this is long but it bears reading: BAM was in the Bahamas but she did not attend the Directorate meeting. CHS had a man there to give an audit report (not sure which audit). The report showed that BAM embezzled over two million dollars from the sorority. CHS would not allow anyone to make a motion to suspend BAM. They did manage to pass a motion for CHS to send BAM a letter asking her to make restitution. ESO did a lot of crying and kept going to the back of the meeting room talking on her cell phone. CHS waited until the man left the room to take back the audit report from the Directorate members because she did not want it to get out to the public (membership). CHS continues to cover up BAM’s wrongdoing. The undergrads were hot under the collar about BAM’s embezzlement and wanted action taken but CHS would not allow them to make the motion. CP said that the report proves that the WI8 are correct in everything they alleged in their lawsuit so what were they going to do about their suspension. CHS yelled at her and told her, “One thing at a time.” Many members were shocked beyond belief at the damning report and they still allowed CHS to bully them into taking no action. It was quite a dramatic meeting. These women do not realize that they can be held personally liable for breach of their fiduciary duty. They are elected to protect AKA not BAM. If anyone has a copy of that audit report, please post it on this site so that we can read it. Thank you”
