Our marijuana laws have never, and will never, be enforced fairly. The brutality of modern drug enforcement reaches every community, but if young white men were given criminal records and subjected to profiling and police harassment at the same rates as people of color, the criminal justice system would quickly come to a crashing halt. The drug war was built on a foundation of fundamental unfairness, and mitigating its catastrophic impact on communities of color requires measures far more drastic than telling police for the millionth time that there’s more to their job than searching young black men all day and night.
No, legalizing marijuana won’t solve the problem. Not even close. But what it will do is remove one of the primary justifications police rely upon when stopping and searching people in urban communities.

Morgan is correct about the unfair practices of the enforcement of the law.

NATIONAL BLACK CHURCH INITIATIVE CONDEMNS CA STATE CONFERENCE OF THE NAACP FOR SUPPORT OF LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA
The NAACP Have Lost Their Minds
Washington DC- The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), a coalition of 34,000 churches, stands with the International Faith-Based Coalition in denouncing the California Conference of the NAACP for its support the legalization of marijuana. This is becoming a consistent pattern with the NAACP – they are willing to find some creative, legal rationale to justify activity detrimental to Black families and the Black community. The NAACP has a fee-based system – basically they can be bought on both on its national and chapter levels. This is highly disturbing, immoral, and a betrayal to the African American community.
NBCI whole-heartedly supports the International Faith-Based Coalition in their efforts to overturn Prompt 19. Ms. Alice Huffman has overlooked the needs of the Black community in favor of white organizations that support the NAACP. This is not the first time – Ms. Huffman has also defended tobacco industry whose deadly products negatively impact African American youths and the community as a whole. She should be removed. NBCI is designating her as enemy #1 to the Black Church in California.
California has had a very public financial crisis and as a solution is now looking to the legalization of marijuana to solve its financial woes. NBCI stands firm – we must uphold
laws which protect Americans from this harmful drug. Haven’t we seen enough carnage from tobacco and alcohol? During this economic downturn all Americans have been forced to assess what is important and the limits we will go to survive and thrive. This cannot be our new standard; moral guidelines cannot be overthrown to reduce debt.
Rev. Anthony Evans, President of NBCI states, “I would like to commend Rev. Ron Allen in his leadership against this evil Prompt 19. The NAACP is becoming an enemy to the Black family. First, they want to push same-sex marriage on the Black community because the gays have given them a large financial contribution. Now they are allowing Ms. Huffman to unleash her unethical practices by supporting drugs that have ravished the African American community over the past 30 years. I am authorizing all of our churches in the West Faith Command not do give a damn dime to the NAACP and not allow their congregation to be used for any of the NAACP meetings. There is no way that the Black Church will permit this immoral act as it will only further the devastation of the African American community.”
