I’m going to be honest: I had low expectations of today’s event. It’s not to discredit the work of Tavis Smiley; It’s that I feel leery about public discussion of such private matters. But black folks aren’t privately struggling- we are PUBLICLY struggling. This is why it’s a dialogue that everybody should experience whether they agree with it or not.
Today’s “agenda” was less about what we SHOULD DO but rather how we should THINK before WE DO. That’s why criticism usually abounds because people focus on what’s being done before what’s being thought.
The Bible says that “as a man THINKETH, so is he”. It never says we are what do. It says we are, WHO WE THINK WE ARE. We have low expectations of ourselves and that’s why we don’t reach HIGH. We can’t DO better until we KNOW BETTER and we can’t KNOW BETTER unless we think.
The Bible also says in Phillipians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS”.
Once we think, we can know WHAT TO DO, and then maybe, just maybe…those things can be done.
Same group of people. Same tired discussions.
