If you live in the Los Angeles area, you’ve probably seen it no less than a thousand times. I’m talking about the breathtaking, 8-story-high Harbor Freeway Overture mural just east of the 110 fwy downtown. Most prominently featured are violinists Julie Gigante, Oboist Allan Vogel, cellist Margaret Moores and concertmaster Ralph Morrison.
Muralist Kent Twitchell took nearly 2,000 hours and 500 gallons of paint to complete 11,000 square foot piece of art…which spanned three different building panels.
In fact, I was a marketing assistant during the time painting began and when it was eventually finished, immortalizing the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for all of us to see. It was my first real job out of college at Georgetown. The person who hired me and the person who made that mural you still see today possible…was the organization’s executive director, Deborah F. Rutter…who this week was named as the 3rd president overall and first female president of the Kennedy Center.
Story HERE.
She’ll serve as both artistic and administrative director of the Kennedy Center’s theater, dance, chamber music and education initiatives. And if that’s not enough to keep her busy, she’ll also oversee the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera.
