A new app originally named “ghetto tracker” is causing all kinds of controversy. In less than 24 hours, this brand new app created enough backlash to prompt an immediate name change. Instead of “Ghetto Tracker” it’s now called “Good Part of Town.” Still, critics call it racist and classist, saying it’s a way for the rich to avoid the poor.
How does it work? Users rate the safety of a given part of a city or town. But the app doesn’t use hard data like mugging statistics or murder rates. It’s based on locals’ input. Critics say that’s a problem because it is based solely on peoples’ prejudices.
In addition to the name change, the word “ghetto” has been removed from the app and the company’s website.
