Social media has changed the way media and public figures live their lives and do their
business. Yes, that would be nominee for understatement of the year, but still relevant to this particular discussion. It was because of an informal Twitter conversation between myself and actor Boris Kodjoe that this interview comes to you today.
Anyone in the business knows that reaching someone by way of a publicist, manager or agent pretty much means that you will not reach the intended at all. It’s just how this superficial world of entertainment works.
On the other hand, you do have sincere
individuals like Kodjoe who engage the public, even sometimes at their own peril. My read is that he is a family man first, far more concerned with caring for his wife and family than his career. It’s a family which includes a special needs child and all the obstacles which may accompany such circumstances.
Although most perceive him as an “African-American,” he is nothing of the kind…and I mean that as the greatest of compliments. He is a German citizen, who speaks at least three languages fluently and self-admittedly still “thinks” in German. You wouldn’t know it by listening to him.
Every time you might see him on screen playing an “African-American” character…he is truly acting. The experience was at one time as foreign as everything else found in this country.
If you thought he grew up speaking English you would be wrong, but not the first to make the assumption. It is in his story of European birth and African lineage that you may find inspiration in the fact that he sees himself and moves through life as a “Black” man; despite influences around him which could easily encourage otherwise.
Mo’Kelly will let Boris Kodjoe tell the story as it sounds far better coming from him. It is a story which explains his ultimate involvement in the fight to raise awareness regarding the birth defect of spina bifida, and even the more subtle way in which attire can greatly impact our outlook on life.
