Funk stars War are reportedly upset over being left off the latest list of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees – while rap group the Beastie Boys made the Class of 2012.
Founding member Howard E. Scott insists that his band should receive the honor before the Beasties, who actually sampled the War hit “Low Rider” on their 1986 “Licensed to Ill” track “Slow Ride.” [Scroll down to listen.]
Scott tells TMZ, “We were cranking out gold records when they were still in diapers. How could the Beastie Boys get in before us when they sampled War’s music on their first album? I’ll eat their platinum records! (The snub) felt like I was kicked in the back of my britches.”
The 27th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions take place April 14 in Cleveland.
Joining the Beastie Boys will be Guns N’ Roses, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the late singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and the British troubadour Donovan. The late bluesman Freddie King will be inducted as an Early Influence, while writer and producer Don Kirshner will receive posthumously the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers. Three producers — the late Tom Dowd, Glyn Johns and New Orleans R&B icon Cosimo Matassa — will receive The Award For Musical Excellence.
