The View Goes Ballistic Over the ‘N-Word’ (VIDEO)

ABC has been flooded with emails both in support and complaint of the dialogue regarding Rick Perry’s hunting grounds moniker.

Co-hosts Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters got into a long, drawn-out exchange over the why, when and how the use of the N-word, relative to context and orator can be offensive.

Anyone who knows Mo’Kelly knows where I stand.

Do you think there would be any debate over the use of the Italian, Jewish or Latino equivalents?

Of course not.  The word has no place in our society.  Despite what Whoopi Goldberg argues that young people have “done” to “sterilize” the word, all it takes is one news report and we’re back to square one.  That’s all the proof Mo’Kelly needs.

It doesn’t need to be sterilized, it needs to be laid to rest altogether.  It has no purpose in our consciousness, our music, our movies or our politics.

Let’s not parse the discussion any further.  But Mo’Kelly will say…it’s always nice when people like Sherri Shepherd are willing to go to bat for “us” even when it may not be popular to do so.  It was noticed, noted and in many ways needed.

But, Mo, isn’t Sherri’s stance problematic in that it allows for acceptance if and only if the word is used by our race?

Yes, it is problematic. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t advocate for any use, any time under any circumstances…for just this reason. These debates don’t need to happen, because they don’t happen with any other group. Our use confuses the issue.

I’m with you, Mo. But the older (40 and up) generation fails to realize that the N-word has become like curse words–you can say them in private without offense but you’re on your own if you use them in public.

Nothing will change the fact that words like that are said at white and black dinner tables around the country. In fact, my WHITE college roommate told me that his mom would call me “the n-word” behind my back but smile in my face. We tend to be up in arms about the word, but not the ignorance that makes some folks–even you– use it irresponsibly from time to time.

No one is going to put a word to rest. Some folks still don’t believe that slavery ended in 1865. They’ve renamed it “unpaid internships” for minority students while the others secretly get paid and get college credit. If we don’t change the HEARTS of folks (by praying for them, challenging their ignorant views) all of this rolling in the floor, foaming at the mouth, and popping our necks will always have us

    ….BACK AT SQUARE ONE.

We have absolute control over when we use it and why we use it and we sure ain’t just using it at the dinner tables. I think nobody should be so comfortable using it. And the 40+ generation hasn’t failed to realize anything, we simply do not approve of what it’s become. There is no good reason for it.

There are plenty things in society today that are acceptable by young people’s standards that are unacceptable. That’s part of the reason why there are age requirements in life. 18 to drive, 21 to drink and 35 to become president. Maturity and better decision-making tend to come with age. What seems like a good idea at 21 usually never seems like a good idea at 41. That’s not by coincidence either.

Hey Mr. Mo’Kelly, I couldn’t access the video due to an error message on pop-up screen.
Nevertheless, I’m glad Sherri Shepard “checked” Barbara Walter about the use of the “N-word”. White folks are very determine to demoralize that word’s originality, maybe due to guilt that their ancestors created it??
