Two Minute Warning – Troy Davis Clemency Denied

Troy Davis

On the same day, Troy Davis’ clemency was denied in George and Texas convicted rapist and murderer was granted a stay of execution by the U.S. Supreme court. (Supreme Court rejected Davis petition) These converging yet divergent issues of justice set the stage for today’s Two Minute Warning.

I’m pro life (against abortion, unless a woman’s life is in danger).

However, I am pro death penalty. There is a huge difference between an innocent baby in a woman’s womb and a criminal.

Troy Davis is a convicted criminal who shot a man in the face a mere few minutes before he blew away the officer in cold blood. This is no angel here. In fact, at a party he bragged that he was going to “do something” after some women rejected him.

Well, he kept his promise and he did something. And now it’s time to pay the Piper.

I DO agree with you that there is no consistence with the death penalty. With that in mind, I’d strongly urge criminals to move to a state that is free of the death penalty and resume their torment of citizens in those states.

A key precept of our legal system is that it is worse to convict an innocent person than it is to let a guilty person go free. Is it not even worse to kill an innocent person, in the name of the state? I am not speaking specifically of Troy Davis, but when mass murderers like Charlie Manson are still alive in CA after 40 years, and child-killer Casey Anthony recently walked away a free woman, something is seriously wrong. Did you see “The Hurricane” with Denzel? The joke that is our criminal justice system, particularly for black males, was aptly illustrated by this true story. As long as fallible man decides who lives and dies, and there are corrupt elements in the system, capital punishment will be a crapshoot at best, unless you are dealing with a Charlie Manson and he is in a state with no death penalty! Killing of innocent (mostly black)people was the reason Gov. Ryan put a moratorium on capital punishment here in Illinois. It’s the one noble thing he did before going to jail!

Beyond a reasonable doubt…that is a high bar and those seven recantations certainly generated elements of doubt. None of us get out of here alive, and Troy Davis’ ultimate fate rests with God (I am a Christian and I truly believe this). We must try to do the right thing down here. A life sentence, particularly without possibility of parole, is no picnic (my husband worked in the prison system for 23 years and incarceration is far worse that what we see on TV and the movies). What if Ruben “Hurricane” Carter had been put to death during the 25 years he was in prison for a murder he did not do and was eventually completely exonerated of? There is no correction of “mistakes” made by the state when it comes to the death penalty. Therein lies the problem, as it is indeed worse to kill one innocent person in the name of “justice” than it is to let a guilty person go free.

Again, my advice to criminals is as follows:

    a. Search out states that do not have a death penalty

    b. Move to one of those states

    c. Scope out areas where you can victimize people

    d. Murder, rob, rape, maim, child molest, etc. in those states

For goodness sakes, avoid doing your dastardly deeds in states that have a death penalty because I won’t be crying for you when they decide to fry you…

My advice to criminals would be to have a conversion experience with Jesus. Just because there is no death penaly does not mean there is no punishment. Crime happens in all 50 states, and the death penalty has been shown NOT to be a crime deterrent, so I doubt if your advice will be taken, Lynn. I hear your anger, and I too am fed up with the endless horrific crimes committed in America (although I don’t think child molestation results in the death penalty, crimes against children are woefully underpunished). But anger cannot be the basis of social policy. Your mind is made up, but I stand by the validity of the issues I raised in my initial post.
