The Sesame Street Workshop, in response to pressure from same-sex marriage advocates to “teach” children about same-sex relationships has released the following statement.
Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.
Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”
For Mo’Kelly, it’s very simple. This is not about whether one agrees or disagrees with same-sex unions or relationships. This is about the innocence of children. Children don’t need to understand the basis of heterosexual relationships either. Although Sesame Street has long been an instructive tool for children regarding academic subjects, extending it into active social advocacy is wrong.
As adults we can look at children’s characters through adult eyes and attribute sexuality…Mo’Kelly gets it. But this is not about adult programming…but children’s programming.
These are children. Let’s allow them to be.
Now that the seriousness of this post is out of the way…let’s have some fun.
Peppermint Patty of the Peanuts gang with her flannel shirts, Birkenstocks and weird fixation on Marcie…probably lesbian. It doesn’t hurt that she also favors actress Jodie Foster. That’s a plus.
Speed Racer…mustard-colored racing gloves, red ascot and white leather pants. Mo’Kelly doesn’t care that he has a girlfriend (Trixie). Speed Racer is probably on the down-low.
Or how about Batman and Robin? YOU see Batman and Robin, MO’KELLY sees Eddie Long and one of his accusers. That “relationship” between Batman and Robin is odd on its best day. If either were to publicly proclaim their relationship for all the world to see…Mo’Kelly would be in no way surprised. If Robin ended up suing Batman for sexual coercion…Mo’Kelly would be in no way surprised. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo might be on their way to court too for that matter.
(Yes, Mo’Kelly knows he’s right at the line here. Trying not to cross it.)
But let’s keep going!
We can’t forget about Snagglepus! He’s a hot pink mountain lion, wears a top hat and a Chippendales bowtie. And oh yeah…has a lisp. Do the math…
(The Pink Panther beyond his pinkness seems hetero for those of you thinking the obvious.)
And last but not least…Fred from Scooby Doo. There’s the ascot again. He has a van and has never made a move on Daphne or Velma. Paid shaggy FAR more attention than any of the women. Mo’Kelly’s just sayin’…Fred seems open to an alternative lifestyle. There’s no telling what went on in The Mystery Machine.
OK, Mo’Kelly’s done.

Let’s not forget Gazoo from the Flintstones. I’m sure he carried a pocketbook full of rainbows.
Velma from Scooby Doo? Definitely lesbian.
Pocketbook full of rainbows? THAT is funny.
This was the funniest thing!
Never thought any of this well maybe yogi and boo boo. if you check any old disney movie they all had under tones…
funny!
Hilarious, Mo! I thoroughly enjoyed this. Good reading!
Well put. While I have no problem with gay marriage/civil unions, I don’t recall every having seen ANY marriage on Sesame Street. So not the place for political discussions! Let kids be kids!
Actually Lindy – Maria and Luis got married on Sesame Street. I think the actress playing Maria was pregnant in real life so they had to figure something out. They handled many “life” issues like medical conditions, adoption, abuse – but IMHO sexual orientation has no reason to be “explored” on Sesame Street.
I enjoyed this post MoKelly:) Now, I always had a problem with Thundarr. Defintely a bear. And Bugs Bunny was constanly in drag…
This post is becoming too popular…might have to do a part two.
I always figured the Smurfs were suspect. How is it that Smurfette is the only female? I figured she was a smurf in drag. Why did I always think that Papa Smurf was her father? He was trying to get on too! LOL. All I can say is that Smurfette had to be WAY popular…I’m just sayin’.
