Some of the most poignant of Dave Chappell’s skits on his short-lived show dealt with Black people “Keepin’ it Real”.

In these skits, Blacks who had achieved a modicum of advancement or success within the conventions of society, choose to “keep it real” and adhere to fostered perceptions, supposedly of ‘conventional wisdom’, within the Black community.

Inevitably these skits would end up with the protagonist vanquished, defeated, humbled and rejected by the same staid establishment that had initially proffered the opportunity, but reconsiders in the light of the actions taken. The hero’s insistence to foist radical, unconventional policies and principals onto an unwilling populace merits only their expulsion out of the very circles from within which they might have been able to effect real (not just perceptional) change had they properly gauged the circumstances and evaluated their approach.

Every one of President Obama’s detractors seem to want Obama to be them: “I wouldn’t have done it that way” is the message behind their criticism. The real teachable moment here is: “That’s why you weren’t elected President of the United States of America.” Cornel West should be very appreciative that there is a measured and meticulous Barack Obama so that West’s “wild, wild” esoteric rants can be given any sort of gravity and taken seriously anywhere beyond the halls of academia.

It is quite obvious that Professor West is devoid of an image consultant. As a candidate, I doubt that he would be able to swing the vote of the Heartland, Bible Belt, Blue states, Red states, or any other demographic. While I greatly admire the intellect of West, he really needs to stay in his lane.

Criticism of any standing President comes with the turf, and President Obama should not get a free pass just because he’s Black; likewise, he should not have to embody and defend every Black ideal, dream, ambition or desire. He is the President of ALL of the United States, and the minute his agenda starts to be specifically a Black agenda, we will see America “Keepin’ it Real” and showing him the door.

This is not to say he can not operate for the betterment of Black social and economic disparity, it just has to be done even handed. Just like the financial, housing, and health systems, President Obama inherited a system of racial injustice that has long been broken; one that nobody has recently even attempted to fix. He is faced with staunch opposition which includes extreme racist fanaticism. He’s doing his job in measured increments and it’s benefiting us all.

Those who want him to sprint to the finish line; that’s why YOU’RE not the President. Just keepin’ it real.

Roger R. I wasn’t sure what I find when I reviewed the replies. What an insightful and well stated assessment.

Cornel West needs to sit down!

All that yelling, screaming and jumping around like a clown is old, tired and not needed!

Mr. West needs to place his thoughts on the positive things that this president has done, and stop with his foolishness on wht Mr. Obama should be doing for black folks!

Mr. Obama is the president to ALL of the people in the USA, not just black people.

In addition, Mr. West needs to stop hiding his half-white child by the white woman, and indeed take an example from Mr. Obama in having his children with ONE BLACK WOMAN! These fools need to stop with all the “I am blacker than anyone else talk”, especially when you talk black but sleep white!

You are out of line Mr. West, out of touch, and frankly an embarassment!

Forgot to mention how stupid Mr. West’s comments are regarding the President having fear of “free Black Men”.

    What a crock of crap!

    Cornel West, SIT DOWN!

Hi Mo, I can’t wait for your backstory/commentary! That said, I do not think Dr. West’s is qualifed to diagnose President Obama’s fears. Furthermore, if Dr. West is so “black”, why is he teaching at a predominantly White institution (I have always wondered about that). Do you know the answer, Mo? I’ve got nothing against Dr. West or Smiley, although both of them reek somewhat of the crabs-in-the-barrel syndrome, where Blacks refuse to support one another in their successes, and even actively work to pull each other down. I never thought I would say that I agreed with Rev. Sharpton, but on this issue I do. The is no way the President would have lasted in Jeremiah Wright’s church all those years if he was afraid of black men. As a native Chicagoan, I can tell you that Rev. Wright was already well-known, before Obama became President, as an unapologetic, unafraid, and proud (and very intelligent) Black man.
