(And yes, Will Cain WAS DEFINITELY using a dog whistle in his argument. He just chose the wrong one to use and so the dog whistle was audible to EVERYONE.)
Using the First Lady as the entry point to supposedly make the case of cheap activism is nothing more than partisan politics. She is not a political figure with power; simply standing up for kidnapped girls. Oh, how HORRIBLE of her to do?! The inhumanity of it all!
There is no “other” side to this discussion. And against the backdrop of the kidnapped girls being Nigerian in nature, it is even more objectionable and questionable in terms of motivation. Don Lemon rightly jumped on it.
If the First Lady used a hashtag to help the stray dogs in Russia…would that have been a problem too? Don’t answer that. But I will say there was no “controversy” around the dogs…
