It’s with sadness that I realized the first piece of news I read on February 1 was the suicide of Don Cornelius. Let’s not be misled, Don was suffering from all sorts of health and post-marital issues for quite some time. But to think a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head was a reasonable alternative was an unfitting end to his incredible impact on history and an unsettling thought that he saw no better option as an escape.
I don’t need to review all the highlights of his personal and professional history. By now, you and I should know the societal importance and impact of Soul Train. Yes, this is Black History/African-American History Month, but let’s begin not with a history lesson, but a walk down memory lane.
We wish you peace, love and soul Don…

This is indeed an awful way to start Black History Month. When I heard first thing this morning that Don Cornelius was dead, I figured it was natural causes since he was 75. To find out he committed suicide really saddens me even more. He was one of Chicago’s own (my home town), the epitome of cool, with inimitable style. Don understood that green power was black power. May he rest in peace an he takes that last Soul Train ride to eternity.
This is truly heart breaking.
