Below is one of my favorite songs co-penned by Ashford & Simpson. “I’m Gonna Miss You in the Morning” from the Quincy Jones album Stuff Like That. The lead vocals are none other than the late Luther Vandross and Patti Austin. Vandross was just a struggling back-up singer at the time, given a shot at leading a song early in his career. Background vocals are Ashford & Simpson and Chaka Khan. 1978.

I’m not sure that people fully understand his impact on music and the hundreds of successful songs he wrote. From Tammi Terrell & Marvin Gaye, to Diana Ross to Chaka Khan, this man could write in any style for anyone. What a great poet. On par with great writers such as Smokey.
