A judge dismissed a lawsuit to oust the leadership of the nation’s oldest black Greek-letter sorority, including its president, former Chicago Housing Authority financial executive Barbara A. McKinzie.
But the Chicago-based organization is headed for trial in a wrongful-termination lawsuit filed by a former staffer who said she was fired for questioning spending and alerting state authorities.

Eight members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. sued in June to remove McKinzie, claiming she misappropriated millions of dollars in AKA money, using some of it to pay for a wax statue of herself in a Baltimore museum. They also claimed she arranged for a $4,000 monthly stipend to be paid to her after she leaves the traditionally unpaid office. Her four-year term ends this year.
In her ruling Monday in Washington, D.C., Superior Court Judge Natalia M. Combs Greene criticized the plaintiffs for making “hyperbolic allegations riddled with buzzwords.”
“Throughout her tenure, Barbara McKinzie has led Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. with the utmost integrity and professionalism, and this ruling reaffirms that very fact,” said Dale Cooter, attorney for McKinzie.
Plaintiffs’ attorney Edward W. Gray Jr. said his clients are reviewing their options.
Meanwhile, the case is still on for a Chicago woman who said she lost her job as meetings director at AKA’s Stony Island Avenue headquarters in June for refusing to sign off on McKinzie’s expenditures, then complaining to the state’s attorney general’s office.
Cook County Judge Ronald Bartkowicz recently denied the sorority’s request that the wrongful-termination suit be dismissed.
AKA, which has 60,000 paid members, has until Feb. 22 to answer allegations that it fired Kenitra Shackelford-Johnson within a week of her e-mailing a complaint to the attorney general’s office last June. In August, the sorority denied any wrongdoing, saying Shackelford-Johnson resigned.
“We have every intention of going forward with this case and don’t see any reason why it won’t go to trial,” said Ruth Major, the lawyer representing Shackelford-Johnson.
McKinzie — former chief financial officer of the Cook County Forest Preserve District — hasn’t shied away from the spotlight, appearing at the National Urban League 2009 conference in Chicago and addressing a packed Regal Theater to tout a partnership with Coca-Cola Co. during a Sprite Step Off competition last month.

I hope Noel knows that lying in court is perjury.
I hope that Ms. Shackleford-Jones wins. My concern is that BAM will coerce employees and directorate to lie. I have no doubt they will do just that. BAM already has the undergrad who was Kenitra’s “supervisor” changing her story. Kenitra said she asked if she could leave early. Noel told her yes. Then the next day said she didn’t have the authority to let an employee leave early. At least this judge did not dismiss the case. Is it a jury trial? I hope so. Good luck Kenitra!

I am so grateful that this judge allowed this case to proceed. Although the WI8 suit was different, there are connections with the two cases. Judge Green seemed to say that the plaintiffs exaggerated and the evudence was frivolous. Of course I don't know what evidence Kenitra has altogether. However the use of the credit card, the attempt to defraud sorors who registered at hotels and her brutish behavior towards Kenitra will be discussed. Those who continue to support BAM will have to deal with that information. Additionally a tax return has still not been filed and an internal audit is off the table. Those who will continue to support this type of corruption will not be able to say they didn't know.
Von08…just to clarify, Noel was not Ms. Shackelford's supervisor. Her supervisor was the Deputy Director, Nicole Barrett who is also currently still employed in the corporate office. Yes, there will be a jury trial for this case. Remember that jurors are comprised of our peers, so I am quite sure these will be people who have lost their jobs, homes, cars, etc. due to the greedy misdeeds of corporate giants and others who we trusted to handle our monies. Indeed the discovery will more thank likely uncover and overwhelming amount of information that the members had no idea about and that will be too much to just ignore and say "busines as usual". It is my prayer that from this civil suit, criminal acts are uncovered as well (wire fraud, bank fraud, etc.)and from that criminal charges. If the governor of Illinois can be indicted, who is BAM? Someone said this is just about an unemployment issue, no it is not. It is about terminating an employee AFTER she notified state officials of financial malfeasance. Under the IL statute 740 ILCS 175/1, it is very clear on the protections of a whistleblower. BAM has total disregard for the amount of damage she has done. It's not her own money being used, it's AKAs and her loyalty is only and will always be self-serving. Watch how many people she will "throw under the bus" at trial.
