Statement from Omega Psi Phi on Youngstown State Murder

Statement from Dr. Andrew A. Ray,

Grand Basileus – Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

The collective thoughts and prayers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. are with the family of Brother Jamail Earl Johnson. We pray for their comfort and peace during this difficult time. Our thoughts also are with the 11 victims of the senseless act of violence occurring in Youngstown, Ohio on February 6, 2011.

We wish to thank Youngstown State University President Dr. Cynthia E. Anderson and her staff for the sensitivity afforded to the Johnson family during this ordeal. The Fraternity would like to acknowledge the work of the Youngstown Police Department in the ongoing investigation. Our International Chaplain will be available to assist the family.

Brother Johnson became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on March 21, 2009, through Zeta Gamma Chapter at Youngstown State University. He was a Business Management major and was scheduled to graduate with several other members of his chapter this spring. Brother Johnson served the Fraternity as the chapter’s recording secretary.

The death of Brother Johnson is a tragedy of immeasurable proportion to the Fraternity. The community will never benefit from his full potential and promise. He was a native of Youngstown, active in various student organizations and, was working to pay his way through college.

On the evening of the tragedy, Brother Johnson and his fellow chapter members were entertaining guests at their residence, when intruders sprayed the residence with gunfire. This senseless act of violence has stunned the Fraternity, the collegiate community and, all who respect civility in our nation.

Some media outlets have incorrectly reported that the incident occurred at an Omega Fraternity house and that the gathering was a Fraternity sponsored event. The Fraternity does not own any Fraternity housing in the State of Ohio and the gathering was not a Fraternity sponsored event. The Fraternity brothers in their residence did nothing wrong and were the victims of this criminal act.

Individuals, who engage in intellectual thought and the pursuit of academic attainment, significantly add to the quality of life in the community. Students and the broader community are entitled to a safe environment in which citizens can work, learn and grow. Senseless violence cannot be allowed to abridge the entitlements of the community.

The weight of this tragedy strengthens our resolve to uplift humanity at every station in life as we carry the hope and promise of our Brother, Jamail Johnson. The men of Omega join the citizens of Youngstown as we collectively seek to heal from this catastrophic event.

Note: Any inquiries pertaining to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in relation to these events should be directed to Christopher M. Cooper, Esq. Telephone: (614) 447-0225 or Electronic mail: ccooper4th@aol.com

Ohio Frat House Shooting – 1 Dead 11 Wounded

This is the unfortunate state of the world in which we live.  Full story HERE.

The two men accused of shooting into a Youngstown State University fraternity house, killing one and wounding 11, were apparently angry because they were being thrown out of a party there, police said Monday.

Police identified the suspects in the Sunday shooting as Columbus E. Jones, 22, and Braylon L. Rogers, 19, both Youngstown residents.

Jamail Johnson, 25, of Girard, Ohio, died in the shooting. He was shot once in the back of the head and several times in the lower body, Dr. Joseph Ohr, a forensic pathologist at the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office, told CNN.

Eleven people, including six students, were hurt. All but three had been treated and released by Sunday afternoon, said Tina Creighton, a spokeswoman for St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Creighton did not immediately return a telephone message Monday seeking an update.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning during an impromptu party at the off-campus fraternity house of Omega Psi Phi, according to police.

Omega Arrested for ‘Indecent Liberties’ at National Convention

Maybe the caliber of membership has decreased relative to the sheer numbers of African-Americans in college, which have also dropped.  Maybe the talent pool is just too shallow or maybe…just maybe, our organizations have become too shallow in and of themselves.  I will say without a doubt that there is a measurable and despicable criminal element within my very own Omega Psi Phi; an element in direct contradiction

Founders of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity

to everything my founders Oscar James Cooper, Frank Coleman, Edgar Amos Love and Dr. Ernest Everett Just championed.

Yup, I said it and I meant it.

It’s not the popular thing to say, but it needed to be said.

Mo’Kelly – 7.15.09

At our Grand Conclave this week, one of our 36-year old members was arrested for “indecent liberties.”  That’s the official read.  The “unofficial” account is that this fraternity brother groped a 15-year old girl.  The saddest part in looking at the mug shot…Mo’Kelly knows this brother.  From what Mo’Kelly knows, the man was not registered to attend the convention and was simply a congregant.  As it would be unfair to attribute the actions of one to describe the body, Mo’Kelly was already on the record as to a certain “element” within my fraternity.  This has to stop or we will be extinct…period.

___________

Raleigh, N.C. — A Greensboro man is accused of touching a young girl inappropriately while attending a fraternity convention in downtown Raleigh.

According to arrest warrants, Javelin Edric Hall, 36, of 5052 Bartholomew’s Lane, was attending the Omega Psi Phi convention on Fayetteville Street when the alleged incident occurred Saturday afternoon.

Javelin is currently a faculty member at nearby North Carolina A&T University.

The girl’s mother said the 15-year-old was raising money for a church at the time of the incident.

Hall is charged with taking indecent liberties with a child. He was being held Sunday in the Wake County jail under a $25,000 bond and is due in court Monday.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Imposes Nationwide Membership Moratorium

STORY HERE

WARNER ROBINS — There won’t be any new members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. for the foreseeable future.

An electronic letter sent to members by the fraternity’s general president, Herman “Skip” Mason Jr., says future intake processes for new members are suspended indefinitely, citing “the failure of some of our members to behave honorably and with care.”

His message comes less than a month after suspected hazing by members of the fraternity’s Fort Valley State University chapter left one member seriously injured and another member arrested for apparently causing the injuries.

“Following my review of 2009, it became clear to me that one area that needs our immediate focus is the conduct of brothers involved in the intake process,” Mason letter stated. “Our process was designed with the assumption that our members would conduct themselves honorably and with care. Regretfully, in several instances, that has not occurred. “This means that all membership intake activities shall be and are hereby suspended until further notice.”

One man, 21-year-old Bryson Trumaine Amey, was charged with felony aggravated battery in connection with an incident that Fort Valley police say occurred on the evening of Nov. 29. The incident left 19-year-old Brian Tukes hospitalized. Tukes, a 2008 graduate of Westside High School in Macon, was diagnosed with acute renal failure and admitted to the Houston Medical Center on Nov. 30. He was later transferred to The Medical Center of Central Georgia. He has since been discharged.

Efforts to reach Tukes and Amey were unsuccessful Monday.

The incident report mentions that the suspect or suspects apparently used their hands, fists or other body parts to physically assault Tukes at the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity house at 603 Carver Drive. The report says the hazing went on from Sept. 10 to Dec. 1. Information on the incident report for 14 people listed as witnesses was redacted.

Tukes’ mother, Phyllis Tukes, informed university officials of her son’s allegation. The university then alerted the Fort Valley Police Department, which is handling the investigation. The department will hand its findings over to Peach County District Attorney Cliff Woody, who will determine whether other charges will be filed.

Mason said in a statement after the Fort Valley incident that his organization saw hazing as an act against the entire Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and that the group’s reputation would be upheld through legal avenues against wrongdoers.

No such legal action has been substantiated. Other than the earlier statement and the letter sent to members over the weekend, the fraternity has been mum on the subject.

Brian Joseph Anthony Kelly, spokesman for the fraternity out of its national office in Baltimore, said by phone Monday that answers to several questions, including what incidents contributed to the decision to halt intake and whether all were related to physical hazing, would be sent via e-mail. By Monday night, that e-mail had not been received.
