The New York Times Details ‘New’ Toned-Down Al Sharpton

New York Times…where the hell have YOU been?

Personally, Mo’Kelly thinks this article was unnecessary.  It alleges the silence of Sharpton in the debate over the alleged sexual assault of a Black housekeeper by Dominique Strauss-Kahn is both noticeable very “new” in nature.

Only if you haven’t been following Sharpton since Barack Obama became president would you see this as anything “new.”  Ever since the inauguration, it’s been obvious Sharpton has taken a very conciliatory tone in regards to the federal government specifically and issues of race more broadly.

Publicly, Sharpton would say he has “grown” but professionally it’s obvious that his access to mainstream acceptance (read: MSNBC) and political relevance (read: presidential confidante) are tied to softening the rigidity of his outward demeanor.

Some in African-American circles would allege that Sharpton has sold out.  No, he just made a business decision which best suits his longevity.  There is a difference.  You can’t be an MSNBC host and protesting “the man” on a corner in Harlem whenever it suits you.  Can’t have it both ways and Sharpton understands that.  You can’t go on a poverty concert tour by way of a bus, simultaneously complaining about not being invited to the White House and expect to be taken seriously by the White House.

Let Mo’Kelly know your thoughts about this piece…

____________________________

In the three months that the city and a good portion of the world buzzed about the hotel housekeeper and the French man of power, voices big and small spoke up for one side or the other, or simply urged that justice be found in a courtroom. There were news conferences, rallies, protests, cable-TV exhortations.

But one New York staple has been silent throughout the debate over the housekeeper, Nafissatou Diallo, and the French man of power,Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a voice many would have expected to be among the loudest: the Rev. Al Sharpton, the provocative civil rights activist.

He has apparently said nothing publicly, issued no position statement. He has not shown up at rallies centered on the case.

Why?

“It’s a good question that I’d like to know the answer to,” said Assemblyman Eric A. Stevenson, a Bronx Democrat who has been outspokenabout seeing the case go to trial. “I’ve wondered, ‘Where is Al Sharpton?’ ”

On the face of it, it seems precisely like the sort of sensational and polarizing case that Mr. Sharpton, a master of sound bites, has habitually inserted himself into, at megaphone volume: Ms. Diallo, a housekeeper at the Sofitel New York, accusing Mr. Strauss-Kahn, then the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, of raping her when she arrived to clean his room. And then the case collapsing after her credibility came into question, with the charges being dismissed.

Sarah Palin Destroyed by New York Times

ARTICLEURLNice job of the NY Times vetting Sarah Palin since the Republicans didn’t…and it’s not pretty at all.

Barack Obama – New York Times Feature

I could copy/paste the text here, but article is way too long to be read in the blog medium. But that’s why hyperlinks were invented.

HERE you go.

New York Times…LATE on the Juanita Bynum Story

If any of you ever wondered how the blogosphere is now driving the news…look no further. On Sept 20th, the New York Times, arguably the best and most-respected print news periodical in the nation ran this story on Juanita Bynum.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/20/us/20preacher.html?_r=2&ref=todayspaper&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

Do note that The Mo’Kelly Report and other Black bloggers had touched upon this ‘story’ more than a month ago. Do note that when the New York Times talks about:

“The episode has led to debate about domestic violence and how churches, particularly black churches, respond to it.”

Know that The Mo’Kelly Report (although uncredited) had more than a little bit to do with that.

http://mokellyreport.blogspot.com/2007/09/from-usatoday-mokelly-was-right-and.html

You’re late New York Times…just next time, give The Mo’Kelly Report its due credit for being out in front of the story and not a month behind it. In the meantime, Mo’Kelly will have to settle for knowing that the editors over at the NY Times occasionally sneak a peak at The Mo’Kelly Report.

If Washingtonpost.com and Reuters.com are not above crediting The Mo’Kelly Report, or listing it as an additional source on these types of stories…it’s ok for the rest of mainstream media to do so too. Last Mo’Kelly checked, Reuters and The Washington Post are pretty well-respected as news information sources.

But Mo’Kelly digresses…

Interestingly enough, Juanita Bynum’s official website links to this Times article…which is something far from flattering overall.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/20/us/20preacher.html?_r=2&ref=todayspaper&oref=slogin&oref=slog

If you don’t have time to read the whole article (like the Bynum staff clearly didn’t) and just want the highlights…here are the passages that Mo’Kelly most especially enjoyed. You tell Mo’Kelly if you’d have your OWN website link to an article detailing the following:

“Since the attack, Ms. Bynum, 48, has tried to reinvent herself once more, announcing that she is “the new face of domestic violence.” But Tom Joyner, the syndicated radio talk show host, did not let her off the hook so easily: “If you’re a prophet,” Mr. Joyner asked, “didn’t you see this coming?”

OUCH!

“Conservative critics among the evangelical clergy have accused her (Bynum) of exploiting the attack for publicity, calling her “loud,” “angry,” “aggressive” and “out of control,” while a group of black and Hispanic churches has demanded Mr. Weeks’s resignation. Fans responded with shock.”

OUCH! OUCH!

“The assault, Dr. Lee said, is a challenge to Ms. Bynum’s credibility: “Maybe she’s been living a lie all these years.”

BOOYA!

“In a private ceremony in July 2002, Ms. Bynum married the relatively unknown Mr. Weeks, a Washington pastor from a family of clergy members. The couple announced the union in October, then followed up with a lavish New York ceremony in 2003 — with a 7.76-carat diamond, an orchestra and 1,000 guests — shown on the Trinity Broadcasting Network.”

(Maybe if she sells the diamond…she won’t have to beg Mo’Kelly anymore for 200k for a “Threshing Floor”…on the lake of course. Question, does the 200k only buy the floor, or do we have to come up with another 200k for each wall and ceiling needed to surround the floor? Or is it to be an outdoor/open-air/backyard style of “threshing floor?” Just curious.)

But back to the article…

“But during the marriage, Ms. Bynum publicly focused on the duties of a Christian wife, counseling women to give their husbands plenty of sex and to ask them, “Do I please you?”’

Huh?!

“About this time, Ms. Bynum glamorized her own look, trading a bun for a hair weave, picture-perfect makeup and plastic surgery that she discussed on the BET network. Her wardrobe went from ankle-length skirts to casual chic and glittering jewelry.”

Plastic surgery?! Plastic surgery…Oh Lord…Lil’ Kim has gone from the big house to the pulpit.

Uh…did anybody on the Bynum staff actually READ the NY Times piece? Because if they did, they surely wouldn’t have linked it to the official website. That’s like Bishop Weeks providing a link on his website to his arrest report on www.thesmokinggun.com and featuring the mugshot on his home page.

And since Bynum’s staff is clearly indifferent about the content of what Bynum’s official site links to…they should have no problem linking to The Mo’Kelly Report too.

We know y’all are reading it…Bishop Jakes obviously has. The New York Times has…

Wesley Snipes has…

Usher has…

BET does…regularly.

You get Mo’Kelly’s point…

It’s time for America to stop living in denial…y’all love reading The Mo’Kelly Report and it’s ok to do so. The sooner you collectively stop denying it, the sooner Mo’Kelly will cut some of you folks a break.

Thank you for your continued readership (New York Times)…you are now added to Mo’Kelly’s list of subscribers.
