The Staggering Hypocrisy of T.D. Jakes Regarding Eddie Long

I reach out and challenge those of us who can, to

Bishop T.D. Jakes

contribute financially to the defense of these young men. Perhaps you are unable to be there physically. Your schedule like mine may not always allow you to show up on a particular day or time…. However, I challenge those of us who can to give financially, not for publicity, not for fame, not for notoriety, but because it is the right thing to do.

There is an old saying, when you are searching for something, “It is better to light a candle and see, than to scream blindly into the darkness.” Financial support combined with raising the awareness of an injustice by protest, is a powerful resource that can yield incredible results. I implore you to, after we have so vividly pointed out the injustices that still haunt our country, to provide the financial backing to allow them to fight the good fight.”

T.D. Jakes: September 2007

If Mo’Kelly didn’t give you any backstory, one could wrongly assume that Jakes’ words above were in reference to the four men who’ve recently alleged

Jena 6 Protest

sexual coercion on the part of friend and fellow megachurch pastor, Bishop Eddie Long.

Emphasis on “friend” and “fellow megachurch pastor.”

The remarks above were made almost 3 years ago to the day, yet in reference to the Jena 6 controversy.  In 2010, in an attempt to contextualize and direct his congregation in which to best spiritually and morally proceed;  (paraphrasing) he instructed his congregation to “pray.”

Pray for him (Long), pray for them (the accusers)…etc.  Just pray for everybody.  Don’t do anything, just sit on the sidelines until Coach Jakes is ready to call you into the game.

Again, Mo’Kelly is paraphrasing…but that’s the general sentiment after you remove the fiery oratory garnish and bite down on the meat of the message.

Pray…be still…wait on the Lord.  Got it.

Let’s be clear, prayer has its place and prayer has power.  Yet if prayer alone were enough, there would never be any need for any of us to do what was right in the moment of crisis.  This is about doing what’s right, over and above just prayer.

Three years ago, Bishop T.D. Jakes was all about defending young Black men who presumably could not financially defend themselves when pitted against an adversary with larger means.

(Insert ubiquitous self-serving David V. Goliath story here)

Prayer was not enough way back in 2007 according to Jakes.  Not only that, the Jena 6 were already known to be “guilty” in a legal sense, the issue was whether the subsequent punishment fit the crime involved.  There wasn’t any legal battle in which to wait for its completion.  The Jena 6 were already guilty and far from angelic in nature.

Bishop Eddie Long

Conversely, in 2010 there has been no appeal to light another “candle” or to “shine light on injustices that still haunt our country” as it relates to Bishop Eddie Long and/or sexual abuse more broadly.  There has been no ecumenical pontification on how protest when “combined with financial support” could yield incredible results.  There was no interest in helping these particular young Black men “fight the good fight.”  When it came to helping the young Black men who were NOT guilty, not accused of any crime in this instance, merely fighting for some semblance of justice; Jakes’ spiritual conclusion was prayer and prayer only.

Prayer according to Jakes in this case is enough.  The fact that this case “coincidentally” involves a “friend” and “fellow megachurch pastor,” Jakes would have you believe is irrelevant in nature.

Emphasis on (ahem) “friend” and “fellow megachurch pastor.”

It seems that T.D. Jakes is only a part-time advocate for justice.  It depends on when you catch him (wink, wink).

Jakes went to great lengths to explain how and why in 2007 prayer alone was not enough for Jena 6.  What exactly has changed in three years, other than the proximity of Jakes to the accused in question?

I challenge those of us who can to give financially, not for publicity, not for fame, not for notoriety, but because it is the right thing to do.”

If we are really going to go down the road of what is or is not “the right thing to do” then let’s go all the way down the road until it ends.

The “right thing” for Bishop Eddie Long to do was to step aside, at least while the allegations were pending, for the sake of New Birth and the body of Christ.  The “right thing” for Bishop T.D. Jakes to do was to provide wise counsel privately and publicly to this effect.

The cynic in Mo’Kelly says that the reasons why Jakes did not take such a stand were in part connected to the absence of financial gain, publicity and notoriety.  Jakes is showing us presently and has consistently shown us historically that doing the “right thing” is not only uncomfortable for him, it’s unconscionable when his interests are directly impacted.  What’s that old saying…there’s never a wrong time to do the right thing?

Yeah, that’s it.

Maybe the “right thing” for Jakes to do was acknowledge the obvious revision in his spiritual discernment between 2007 and 2010.  If God is the same yesterday, today and forevermore (as we say in the Black Church)…how is it that the “anointed” Bishop T.D. Jakes managed to move from one end of the spectrum to the other in his interpretation of that same word of God in 3 years?

How is something that was “right” three years ago, COMPLETELY wrong

Thomas Weeks and Juanita Bynum

today if neither the word of God has changed nor good sense?  Whatever happened to holding on to His “unchanging hand?”

Oh, Mo’Kelly wishes he had a witness today…

Some years ago, another one of Jakes’ “Bishop friends” in the form of Thomas Weeks III found himself in the middle of a case of domestic abuse with then-estranged wife Juanita Bynum.  Jakes largely was silent, reticent to even condemn domestic abuse, having nothing to do with Weeks’ specific actions.  As a matter of fact, the Juanita Bynum/Bishop Weeks controversy ran virtually simultaneous to the Jena 6 controversy.  After much public goading from The Mo’Kelly Report and other media outlets, Jakes eventually had this to say about domestic violence, characterizing it as “unholy.”

"That Mo'Kelly is getting on my last damn nerve. Stop quoting me...I know what I said!"

As difficult and as painful as it is to realize, both the victim and the perpetrator are souls that God loves. We must realize that the church’s job is not a judicial one. The courts will do that. The church is the place where people can find redemption even when they have made bad choices or been victims of those who did.

We have to stop standing on the road and watching the accident, pointing and staring while the people who are injured in both cars hemorrhage without solution. Churches must be prepared to respond to the needs of all involved including the many children who are often left traumatized and endangered in this toxic environment.”

T.D. Jakes – September 4, 2007

How in the world these words don’t also apply to names like Jamal Parris, Spencer LeGrande, Anthony Flagg et al. and their allegations against Bishop Eddie Long, Mo’Kelly just doesn’t understand.  These are Jakes’ words, not twisted or edited in any manner.

Memo to T.D. Jakes…sexual abuse is “unholy” too…just FYI.

How has the church shown itself to be prepared to respond to the needs of all involved…including the many children who are often left traumatized?  Where is the statement on homosexuality (including when it pertains to bishops) being “unholy” (given Jakes’ well-documented homophobic stance)?  Are we to assume that homosexuality is only an “issue” or an “abomination” when it DOESN’T involve his own son or a “bishop-friend?”

Hypocrisy and inconsistency.

It’s this level of hypocrisy, wrapped in rich displays of “prayer and worship” which fundamentally serves as the root of why people are so turned off by church in general and look sideways at the prosperity gospel in specific.

The Black Church has made a financial killing by way of condemning the world which exists beyond the borders of the physical address of its brick and mortar location, but have had little if nothing to say about the same supposed ills which plague its own edifices.  Regardless of how you individually or your church generally stands on the issue of homosexuality, there must be some consistency in the finger-pointing and consistency in the appeals for prayer and restoration.  Irrespective of how you individually or your church generally stands on the issue of sexual abuse, there too must be some consistency in the finger pointing and the path to restoration.

If the Black church is truly about the business of comforting the afflicted, while also afflicting the comfortable, then it’s time to call a spade a spade…all racial baggage and puns intended.

There needs to be some genuine consistency and consideration in the Black Church, be it Baptist, AME, COGIC, whichever label we attach to ourselves in the attempt to claim a “denomination.”

Bishop T.D. Jakes’ whimsical, contradictory public statements on how best to highlight and fight injustice are telling in many ways.  It is emblematic of God’s truth that we all are cracked vessels…and is proof that Jakes is unaware the internet keeps a record of everything he says and has done, especially the actions reeking of great hypocrisy.

Mo’Kelly had no idea prior to now that defending the defenseless came with a bishop-friend caveat.  Now I do.

Bishop Eddie Long is Burying Himself…All By Himself

UPDATE: Today (Sunday 9.26.10) Bishop Eddie Long went before his congregation and addressed the allegations.  His most salient point and Mo’Kelly quotes…

“I’m not perfect.”  Please see the Tiger Woods statement below about not being “perfect” and see where that got him.”

_________________________________________

Here’s the short, abridged version of this editorial.  “Eddie Long, fire your

Bishop Eddie Long

handlers then sit down somewhere and be still.”

For the longer, more thoroughly explained version, please keep reading.

Either Bishop Eddie Long is receiving consistently horrible advice from the people charged with protecting his image and his livelihood or is himself a consistently horrible client.

Somebody is consistently horrible in this equation.

At present, four males have come forward alleging sexual coercion in the form of extended relationships over the course of years, connected to gifts, trips and other alleged inducements.

Somehow, someway…these prominent public figures keep making the same mistakes over and over again.  This is not a statement about whether the allegations confronting Bishop Long or some portion of them are true.  This is about how once again; the public figure involved seemingly has no idea how to sensibly navigate through these dangerous waters.  Be it Chris Brown, Tiger Woods or even Bishop Thomas Weeks III, none of the aforementioned can control what someone publicly alleges about you.  You can though control what you do in response and not self-inflict maximum damage.

There is a single, golden rule in handling PR crises such as these.  If you are accused of a crime or there may be criminal and/or considerable financial consequences in relation to an allegation made about you…

Shut up.

The more you say, the deeper the hole you dig.  The more you do, the more likely you will ensure your own demise.

Tiger Woods in his first public “statement” on his website had this to say.

As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I’m pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it’s obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Attempting to explain one’s “improprieties” with ambiguous words like “situation” or indirect admissions of non-specific fault such as “I’m not perfect” only increase the public scrutiny and clamor for “the truth.”

In this case, it led to Tiger Woods’ personal and professional life unraveling as the media was then compelled to dig deeper into the story, thanks to Tiger Woods himself giving them good reason to do so.  Tiger Woods personally turned a car accident into the biggest celebrity scandal of the year…all by himself.

Chris Brown in his first public statement after the “incident” with Rihanna posted this statement.

Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person.

Instead of dowsing the fire with water, Brown instead chose kerosene.  Notice the ambiguity of the phrase “what transpired.”  Notice that most people don’t say “sorry” for something that “transpired,” especially when that same something has him locked into a future court date on his calendar.

Not smart and Brown eventually was in many ways forced to later plead guilty.

Bishop Thomas Weeks

Now, look at Bishop Weeks’ statement in the time shortly after “the events” that fateful night in that random hotel parking lot with Juanita Bynum.

This afternoon warrants have been issued making an allegation of aggravated assault and the making of terroristic threats against Bishop Weeks. He has retained counsel to represent him in these charges, and will be turning himself in so that these matters can be handled in court.

Bishop Weeks wants his wife and the Christian community to know that he loves his wife very much. He is very sorry that the events of Tuesday night took place.

What “events” Bishop?  “Turning himself in?”  You don’t ever help make a story bigger.  Weeks ensured the continuation of the story in the media and the unbearable public scrutiny along with it.

Whenever there is a lawsuit or criminal charges pending against you there is only ONE thing you say.  There are variations, but the script is pretty tight in

Mr. Mo'Kelly

nature.

Mo’Kelly wants to thank everyone for their wonderful show of support.  Mo’Kelly’s family and Mo’Kelly appreciate all of your well-wishes.

As this is a pending legal issue Mo’Kelly can not comment publicly at this time.  Mo’Kelly does want to assure you that Mo’Kelly is innocent of all the allegations and in time it will bear itself out.  God bless.

That’s it and not a word more.  Bishop Eddie Long ALMOST got the STATEMENT portion of the strategy correct.  Almost…until the last line.

A Statement from Bishop Eddie Long
Lithonia, Georgia – September 23, 2010

I have been through storms and my faith has always sustained me. I am anxious to respond directly to these false allegations and I will do so. However, my lawyers have counseled patience at this time. But let me be clear; the charges against me and New Birth are false. I have devoted my life to helping others and these false allegations hurt me deeply. But my faith is strong and the truth will emerge. All I ask is for your patience as we continue to categorically deny each and every one of these ugly charges. Finally, as I have done for thousands of others over my decades of preaching, I ask for your prayers for me, my family and our church. On Sunday, at New Birth, I will respond to my congregation.”

In addition to promising to “respond” to the congregation this coming Sunday, Long scheduled a press conference and an interview on the Tom Joyner Morning Show.

The only thing worse than actually conducting the press conference , interview and then having your words used against you later in court is BACKING OUT of them.

Wait, not just that…but backed out of them simultaneous to new allegations and lawsuits.

But back to Long’s published statement…

Now that he’s promised where and when he’ll respond to the allegations according to the last line of the statement, he’s once again locked in to go “on the record,” cameras and recorders set to roll.  If he backs out (again), it will make him look even more guilty.

Long is digging this trench all by himself.  The plaintiffs have nothing to do with this.  A defendant in a case should NEVER be on the record anywhere.  The ONLY person who should EVER speak outside the courtroom on behalf of a defendant is counsel.

Why does this matter you might ask?

If this is a jury trial, Long just furthered poisoned his own jury pool with these actions reeking of guilt.  Even if it’s not a jury trial, he’s further poisoned the court of public opinion which fundamentally impacts his ministry and his future.

Press conference…no press conference.  Not smart.

Tom Joyner interview…no Tom Joyner interview.  Not smart.

"That Mo'Kelly Sure is Smart"

Congregational address…no congregational address.  Not smart.

Unless Bishop Long was going to do a “David Letterman” and get out in front of the story with an admission…Long should have been quiet and still from the beginning.  There should be no more announcements of press conferences, no more statements on the website.  His actions alone may have handed his career and livelihood over to the plaintiffs.  The weight of the public and media scrutiny now will likely crush him in the way it did Weeks, Brown and Woods before him.

When someone simply assails your character, you by all means meet the accusations head on in the press.  In this case there is presumably a multimillion dollar liability suit hanging over the head of Bishop Long and New Birth ministries with undertones of sexual criminality.  This is absolutely the wrong time to be seen or heard with a microphone in front of one’s mouth; innocent or not.  Fight it out in court and let a court victory be all the vindication one needs.  Instead, he’s increased the likelihood he’ll be forced to settle, irrespective of the particulars of the allegations.  He’ll have no choice.

Eventually, one day…somebody…somewhere will get it right.  It just won’t be today.

Tiger Woods Did the Right Thing (with Unintended Consequences)

Mo’Kelly promises, this is his last post on Tiger Woods, (assuming nothing extraordinary is revealed in the coming days.)  If there is one thing that The Mo’Kelly Report prides itself on, it’s offering a different entry point into a conversation, an alternative prism in which to view and examine subject matter.

This would be one of those occasions.

For all the speculation, exaggeration and condemnation attached to the recent revelations of Tiger Woods’ “transgressions,” there hasn’t been any discussion or dare I say “credit” for Tiger Woods doing the right thing.

Yes, Mo’Kelly said doing the right thing.

Sometimes in life, doing the right thing in a given moment has unintended and horrible consequences.

From what we do know about Tiger’s “transgressions” and their connection to the wreck of his Cadillac Escalade, there are some relatively safe assumptions that can be made.

There was one, if not multiple arguments surrounding Tiger’s dalliances and likely escalation along the way.  Although Mo’Kelly made the comparison of Tiger’s first public written statement as to something “Chris Brown-esque,”  Mo’Kelly didn’t take that comparison far enough.  Let’s be fair in that comparison and follow it to its conclusion.

Tiger Woods deserves credit for doing the right thing, even if it had unintended and horrible consequences.

He left the house.

He tried to extricate himself from the situation before it either became more violent and more uncontrollable.  Say what you want about him being at fault for the situation in the first place; Tiger made the right choice to avoid making a bad moment even worse.

If he doesn’t hit the fire hydrant/tree, the sequence of embarrassing events likely never occurs and Tiger’s “personal” issues never see the light of day.  By all means I’m pleased that the only things Tiger struck were an inanimate object and shrubbery.

Yet, in doing the right thing, there were unintended horrible consequences.  Let’s be clear, Mo’Kelly isn’t pushing Tiger’s “transgressions” aside, they are inextricably linked to this discussion.  But for all the disgust and derision heaped on Chris Brown for responding with violence in a similar situation, Tiger at the same time should be applauded.  If there is any mitigating factor to be considered as Woods throws himself on the mercy of the court of public opinion, that is it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  Mo’Kelly is not, has not been and will not ever be a moralist.  If a magnifying glass and spotlight were used on us, most if not all would be embarrassed by our private lives.

Yes, you too.

The difference between the multitude of us and Tiger Woods is that we have far more room to maneuver within our sins.  Mo’Kelly can assure you, if his text messages were to see the light of day…it’s a wrap and he doesn’t even have any endorsements to lose.  It just so happens Mo’Kelly isn’t a celebrity, isn’t married and the world isn’t even close to caring.

Mo’Kelly has far more room to maneuver within his sins.  You do too.

On the other hand, there are some “transgressions” worse than others.  Cheating on a woman will always be more palatable…no, wrong word.  Cheating on a woman will always be more “understandable” than beating on her.

Cheating on your wife makes you a bad husband.  Beating on her makes you a criminal, note the difference.

Bishop Thomas Weeks and Juanita Bynum

That “difference” is the gulf between Chris Brown or Bishop Thomas Weeks III (of Juanita Bynum infamy) and Tiger Woods.

One single and solitary decision.

He left the house.

I can accept Tiger Woods and his “imperfections.”  There was never any need for him to maintain a level of sainthood.  Not him or any other athlete for that matter.  Mo’Kelly has never had any illusions.  It will not affect whether I support the Nike golf line or buy a Buick.  I didn’t buy either prior to now and had no intentions after this story, irrespective of Woods’ marital “transgressions.”

(Digression – Who is more pissed, Cadillac for all the undeserved negative advertisement or Buick for Tiger NOT driving one when he crashed?)

Mo’Kelly can accept a flawed Tiger Woods.  Mo’Kelly can even accept a bad husband Tiger Woods, if that ultimately what he is now and going forward.  But under no circumstances could I accept an abusive or criminal Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods deserves credit for doing the right thing, even if it was connected to doing the wrong thing.  If Kobe Bryant can survive adultery and rape allegations in a career and marriage sense, we can be sure Woods can too.

Of course, let’s keep this in perspective.  If a billionaire athlete loses one or all of his endorsements, he can always “live off the interest.”  Don’t cry for Tiger Argentina, but don’t sell him short either.

He did the right thing.  He left the house.  The story could have evolved in a far worse way and we shouldn’t ever lose sight of this fact.

'Gangsta' Pastor Awaits Sentencing

Almost a year ago to the day Bishop Thomas Weeks was found kicking the crap out of the woman he loved most in plain view of, well…

Everyone.

Although ministerial malfeasance wasn’t necessarily a foreign concept, blatant violence towards women wasn’t exactly a common occurrence. At least not in broad daylight or in public view. Not so anymore.

That was then…this is now. Bishop Thomas Weeks done changed the game. Thanks to Bishop Tommy, “Men of God” all over the country have begun to act a fool (in the biblical sense) with women. You might have seen the video of the St. Paul AME pastor who punched (not slapped) PUNCHED a woman while the cameras were rolling. (One minute in…wait for it…wait for it…POW)

On the eve of the 1-year anniversary of Bynum/Weeks; arguably the most ridiculous and embarrassing scandal in the history of the African-American clergy, comes…

Rev. Thomas Howell.

Gangsta Gangsta!

Granted, Mo’Kelly has no proof that Howell is African-American…but this just “sounds” like us. Is that stereotyping? Probably, but we know “us.” If Mo’Kelly is wrong, feel free to check Mo’Kelly accordingly at a later date.

If you’re unfamiliar with Rev. Howell, (another “Thomas” by the way), he was just convicted of aggravated menacing. What that means specifically, Mo’Kelly isn’t sure. But what Mo’Kelly is clear on is that Howell pointed a gun and threatened to shoot a woman for cutting him off…

…While he was on his way to his church the Monday morning of June 23.

Yes, nothing like brandishing a pistol and threatening to kill someone while on your way to your office to conduct “church business.” Some pastors visit members in the hospital, others threaten to put them in the hospital. Some pastors turn the other cheek, others make sure one round is in the chamber.

Different strokes for different folks. We all worship differently. It’s part of what makes America great.

Some pastors try to prepare us for the afterlife…others do their part to help send us into the afterlife. In a way, it could be a full-service business. Bring you to Christ, send you to the afterlife and even deliver the eulogy. That’s a pretty attractive deal. No middlemen anywhere. Some would even call that “efficiency.”

According to “victim” April Evans, Howell pulled up alongside her car, flashed a gun, asked if she knew who she was messing with before threatening to shoot.

Presumably, Howell was trying to save souls for Christ the day before. Monday…Howell was set-trippin’ and trying to regulate on Forest Ave.

This fool (in the biblical sense of the word) actually had the unmitigated gall to ask whether the woman knew who he was?! What if she did?! Nothing like staring down the barrel of a gun and seeing your own pastor ready to pop a cap in you. That’s only mildly unsettling.

(“Pastor” Howell cruises down Burnet Ave. in Walnut Hills, OH…AMG’s B**** Betta Have My Money blares from the car radio. “Pastor“ Howell sings along.)

“There ain’t nutting like Black ***** on my ****. Word to the Mu********* DJ Quick”

(April Evans, talking on her cellphone and unaware of Pastor Howell’s proximity, inadvertently cuts off “Pastor” Howell as she changes lanes prior to turning on to Forest Ave.)

“Oh! Sorry old man…my bad.”

“Oh no this trick did not cut me off?!” (He yells out the window) “Trick you DO know who I am, right? They don’t call me ‘Pastor Strapped’ for nothing…BEEYATCH! WESTSIDE!!!

(April continues to talk, yet frantically on her phone)

“Oh my God Becky, an old man with a crucifix draped from his neck just pulled a gun on me!”

(“Pastor” Howell leans out of his window, driving wildly and erratically a la “The Joker,” waving his “Nina” round and round.)

“Ain’t nuttin’ but a God thang Baby…one loc’ed out Pastor, call me crazay! Misled congregation pays me. Unfadeable so please don’t try to fade me. BEEYATCH! Pushin’ tithes like weight! Pushin’ tithes like weight! G-G-G-G-G- UNIT!”

“Becky, I have to call you back…a 70-year old gangsta pastor is throwing a “W” hand sign with one hand and now there‘s this red light dot on my temple.”

“Shake it like a saltshaker! Shake it like a saltshaker!”

Anyhow…

Judging by the “scene” above as painted by Mo’Kelly, one may get the idea that “April” isn’t African-American. Does Mo’Kelly know for certain? No…but this just “sounds” like a non-African-American woman. If Mo’Kelly is wrong, feel free to check him accordingly at a later date.

Well according to published reports, April AFTER being threatened with a gun by the “God-fearing” pastor, decided to FOLLOW HIM and chase him through Cincinnati.

Mo’Kelly doesn’t know how it goes down in Cincy, but out here in L.A…they SHOOT people in road rage incidents in a heartbeat. If/when someone flashes a gun at you in the midst of profanity-laden insults…the best course of action is to get to safety immediately, not follow him around town and further antagonize him.

If someone threatens you with a gun…Black folks know to take their word for it.

April got off easy. If “Pastor” Howell was thuggin’ for real, the story would have ended quite differently and the criminal charges would have been far more severe.

Mo’Kelly’s just sayin’…”April” doesn’t sound or act like a Sista. A Sista would’ve likely pulled over and let it go.

(Or pulled her own strap).

As of now Howell awaits sentencing, facing six months in jail.

Mo’Kelly would LOVE to be sitting in a pew this Sunday at First Commandment Church of the Living God to hear the “announcements.” That would HAVE to be high comedy.

“And now, Sister Quintonlisha Jones has our church announcements.”

“Good morning ‘chuch.’”

“Good morning Sista Jones.”

“Giving honor to God…Just wanted to give you an update in the life of our church. Remember Bible study is on Tuesday, Mid-week worship is on Wednesday and Thursday is the sentencing hearing for our illustrious pastor. The Missionary Society will be holding a bake sale to raise money for Pastor’s legal fees down in the fellowship hall after service. Let the ‘chuch‘ say Amen.”

“A-Men.”
