She is far too composed for someone only 18 years old.  She’s avoided scandal despite matriculating from child to fully-grown film star.  She is genuinely affable, comfortable in her skin despite the fame pulling her in the other direction.

“She” is Keke Palmer.

Palmer is the star of the highly-anticipated gospel movie, Joyful Noise.  There is no debate on this occasion as to whether we as African-Americans should line up to support this project.  There is no male protagonist donning drag, no seemingly contradictory messages of morality.

Supposedly, the multitude of us in the African-American community bemoan the dearth of substantive movies and/or thematic deficiencies of mainstream cinema.  Joyful Noise has had a mainstream media push, advertised everywhere from ESPN to NBC.  ”We” can’t claim that there has been an inadequate marketing push behind the project; it is now up to us as consumers to push it over the top.

Joyful Noise is not a “Black” movie in the sense of being buoyed by a niche advertisement campaign.  It is a movie designed to reach the diverse fan bases of its ensemble cast; Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton and Keke Palmer leading the way.  The aforementioned feature different fan bases which traverse  different generations and genres.  Ostensibly, this movie will speak to a wide and varied consumer base.  Expect country, gospel, R&B and hip-hop fans to support this film…or at least that is the hope.

Today in The Mo’Kelly Report, I speak with the star of the film, Keke Palmer and get her thoughts on the importance of the film, how it fits in the larger spectrum of her career and what lies next for her on the horizon.
