Mo' On Radio News — 19 November 2013

Clippers forward Matt Barnes has been in the news for the better part of a week surrounding a game ejection, a subsequent N-word tweet and fine. Broadcasters such as Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley and Michael Wilbon have come to the defense of Barnes, arguing for either selective use of the N-word only amongst African-Americans or in mixed-race company provided all participants are comfortable with its use.

Back story HERE.

Bill Handel of KFI AM640’s morning program, The Bill Handel Show had me on to offer both a personal and community perspective of the ongoing debate and whether the discussion in totality has any merits.

Anyone who knows Mo’Kelly knows where I stand with this.  (And actually so does Bill, as we frequently have morning chats about these types of issues.)

Far too often on radio (and television) these types of conversations are had either without “us” or are dictated “to” us.  For as much as I detest having to discuss such issues in public forums…it is a necessity, or loss of control of the narrative is inevitable.

(Note: The following audio contains objectionable language, including the use of slurs for the purpose of facilitating the discussion, which may be inappropriate to air in certain work environments.)
