Commentary — 18 November 2011

“Madea Simmons,” the central character in the Tyler Perry franchise has an official and authorized Facebook Page which falls under the Perry brand.  On it, you get musings from “Madea,” on a wide-variety of issues, including the casting of Kim Kardashian.

Yes, it’s odd, a fictitious movie character who chimes in on the real casting of a movie.  Nevertheless, it is a sanctioned page of the Perry empire.

And yes, Mo’Kelly knows that “Madea” is a character which tends to act this way.  But Mo’Kelly also knows bad business and mistreatment of loyal fans when he sees it in action.  These are serious issues, not to be dismissed.  It was serious enough for Perry to release a letter to his fans, so nobody can claim ignorance.

No, we don’t think Tyler himself is providing the commentary on a daily basis, he surely has better things to do than play “Madea” on Facebook all day.  But let’s be clear, this too is an extension of the Tyler Perry brand which has hitched its star to the Kim Kardashian wagon.  This too is indicative of how Perry thinks about his fans.  Clearly, the behavior of “Madea” in how “she” interacts with the public is endorsed by Tyler Perry.  Take it for what it’s worth.

Side note: Umm..Maylene, the devil is a lie but whoever said you were literate and could spell is a liar too.  If you Maylene Jones think that the anger over casting of Kim Kardashian is somehow the work of the devil…uh, never mind.  But check out how Dianne Washington responds below…

“Madea” could have ignored Dianne…”Madea” could have tempered the histrionics given the seriousness of the issue, relative to the brand.  But no, couldn’t do that.  There’s an old adage in media…be careful how you talk to or engage the public, because you never know that person’s stature or sphere of influence.  You never know what they will say or do after leaving you.

Today is case in point.

Now note the response from “Madea” on the official Facebook page of “Madea Simmons.”  This evidently is acceptable behavior within the brand.  This is how “Tyler Perry” is engaging his audience beyond his letter.  This is the message that has been sent down from the top.  Nice of “Madea” to throw in “God’s blessing” yet use it in an altogether unGodly manner.  And so goes the enduring “kinda-sorta-Christian” meme throughout all of Perry’s properties.

“God” and “blessings” and “devil is a lie” are mentioned…not much Christianity to be found…ANYWHERE.  (Just highlighting the obvious).

Take the ignorance for what it’s worth…  THIS is what supporting the Tyler Perry brand seems to mean.  THIS is the message that he wishes to put forth.

Hmmm…but Mo’Kelly’s friend Dennis L. brought it all home with the following scripture:

Luke 15:4
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

Matthew 18:12
How think yes? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

Hmmm…like I said, “kinda-sorta-Christian”…
