_____________

“A Colorado State University sorority was quietly ousted from the university in the spring after campus police found numerous alleged incidents of hazing and harassment that one sorority pledge called “torture.”

Pledges from CSU’s Omicron Omicron chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, a nationally chartered black sorority, alleged that they were at times harassed, deprived of sleep and food, and forced to eat cat food and to perform “strenuous physical activity” that prompted one student to seek medical attention.

One student also told police she was forced to write the sorority president’s academic papers. If true, that would be a violation of the school’s honor code and grounds for expulsion for both.

In a 56-page police incident report obtained by The Rocky Mountain Collegian newspaper, pledges describe a litany of tasks they were forced to perform guided by former sorority president Adesuwa Elaiho, who also was an active member of the school’s student government during the time of the allegations.

“She had us at her apartment for three days straight. No sleep, no food. I threw up because I was so hungry,” one alleged victim said in a statement to police.”

  • Von08:

Undergrad members of Zeta Phi Beta will realize that their organization is also facing a difficult time. I know that many undergrads have a very high level of maturity, maybe even surpassing some grad members. Undergrads and grads will work together to get their organization where they want it to be. This alleged hazing incident I hope will be an isolated action. There is too much for Zetas to do to lose focus.

  • Realdeal:

Mo, I am really troubled by our black sororities. What would make someone want to belong and be a part of something so bad that they would endure torture, etc.? This and the stealing does not send a positive message to our daughters. Yes I know we will say that we do commumnity service and blah blah blah, but somewhere focus has been lost and I'm sorry but its beginning to sound like a mesh between a gang and a cult with all the "secrets". How can you tear down your own people? Do you not remember where we came from and how much we had to try to overcome just to get the scraps to survive? Someone somewhere needs to dismantle these organizations and rebuild with a clearer more transparent vision which includes ethics, character, and morals. Otherwise, expect the "man" to begin keeping a very watchful eye on what will be called black terroism.

  • Esbee:

I'm sure that some will disagree, but….this seems kinda lightweight. Not that this is right, but this just doesn't seem as serious as other things I have "heard."

  • You know the deal going in but yet want to cry about it? Does it make it right? No, but come on…man up! Older sorors went through a lot worse than that. LOL We're living in a generation of soft woosies.

  • Esbee:

Yeah, that's play-play stuff. I did more to march in an HBCU band. LOL

  • Esbee:

I am not in a music organization. It's just a tradition in most HBCU bands to "crab" the freshmen. When I was in the band, we didn't have all of these musical greek organizations at the school.

  • JD:

Everybody has there own opinion about pledging/hazing but it sounds like their process was some BS. What only 7 hours of hell? If you agree to participate don't start whining..

  • Kitti J:

It doesn't matter WHAT happened, the level of hazing, how long it happened, WHATEVER. HAZING IS A FELONY. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW!!!!! We can't keep talking about "finer womanhood, sisterly love" and other principles with one side of the mouth, and then break the law with the other side. It's NOT a good look, and people will never take us seriously until we do.

And the deal going in is we are a NON HAZING organization. Period.

And I'm not talking because I can. I am a proud ACTIVE member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority.

  • Bourgeios Zeta Girl:

very well put Soror Kitti J!

  • Diva06:

Go hard or go home. PAPER BURNS, SANDS LAST FOREVER!!!! 1913. Trunks Up.

  • Esbee:

Yeah, hazing is illegal. So is speeding. And I am sure that accidents, caused by speeding, have maimed, hurt, and killed FAR more people than hazing ever will. Especially this play play hazing that these chicks "endured." It is know that a double message is sent by the NPHC organizations. To protect the organizations, we are "non-hazing." But once you get on, IT GOES DOWN. I understood this going in. I went through it, and I put others through it. I loved my Bigs and trusted them. They didn't let me down, and I can go to them even now. I loved and protected every pledge that I had a hand in making. They trusted me, and I didn't let them down. My chapter of initiation has a wonderful, meaningful process that dates back well over 50 years. And NOBODY is going to stop us from passing those traditions down. We are incident-free, because we don't deal in foolishness; we deal in tradition.

  • Me:

BOOOO whatever, cry babies all that stuff was real LUKE luke warm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know what goes on before you get into these organizations. If you don't like it join grad. I do not like and understand when people start to snitch, they do not understand that it makes things worse for them. I have seen things like this happen on my campus before, people who get on, snitch, and then become memebers of the org, can't even enjoy their time as a ungrad because they are now and will be forever lables as a snitch Also there is soooooooooo many things you learn while on such as your REAL history, i dare you to go to your headquaters and ask about your pleadge club, or what your call means…i dare you too you arent going to find out…maybe if there was a better way to get the REAL info then maybe "HAZING" will be done with or maybe if it was made legal again then crazy things would not happen as much…but who am I i'm sure a bunch of people will say what I am saying is bull but its all good, im right you know deep down, and also YOUR NOT GOOD, thats why you don't agree with me…stop being CAT and get with it!

    • Dear "me"

Since when can a woman EVER say what/who is or is not "cat" or "lukewarm?" You're not a man, you're not a Bruh of Omega Psi Phi and you've definitely have no business trying to use "cat" or "lukewarm" in any description of ANYONE. So before you chastise someone about learning "real" history or the meaning of someone's call…please check yourself. This site is maintained by a man of Omega Psi Phi. You're stepping on MY real history.

I agree that the "hazing" was light at best in this instance, but you're out of your element. Also, please mix in a spell/grammar check too. You're not representing whatever organization in which you're a member very well at all.

  • This is another case of young women not recognizing the true purpose of our Great Sorority. First of all, the National Pan-Hellenic Council can to a unanimous decision in the early 1990's to stop the pledging process and go "paper" as it is referred to. Since that time college and university chapters have illegally pledged underground. They have broken laws and disrespected their organization. Some of the most prominent, dedicated, knowledgeable, and loyal fraternity and sorority members I know from across the country came into their organizations as "paper" inductees. On the other hand, I know a tremendous number of "pledge" members, who "crossed the sands" who are not and were never active within a Graduate chapter.

What many young fraternal members fail to realize is that their actions result in unnecessary legal, financial, and sometimes physical consequences--often resulting in death. This is NOT the purpose of our organizations. You would think given the publicity of cases involving various members of the NPHC, these young people would have taken heed, most importantly remembering that they belong to an organization--it is not and never was about their selfish whims.

In all of these underground pledging situations, these co-eds have failed to realize that time is a precious commodity that can never be regained. They should have been using their time and the time of their inductees to serve their colleges and universities, their communities, and organizations. What a waste.

Before you make an incorrect assumption, I was pledged, as was my father, and my children "underground." I deeply love Zeta and our Frat Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma, but that time of having to prove yourself, through, slave-type behavior should be long gone. Our time and resources are needed by our organizations. Through the selfish and immature behavior of co-eds, we are forced to spend our time and resources in totally unnecessary manners.

GROW UP and represent your organizations with zeal and dignity.

  • pledged:

There are some people who believe that a distinction between pledging and hazing is just a play on words. I, however, see a clear difference. Those who haze and allow themselves to be hazed engage in activities with no purpose. Pledging has a purpose, there is a lesson to be learned. You may not understand the purpose at that present time, but it will eventually reveal itself. Especially if a responsible prophyte takes the time to clarify any behavior to a neophyte. I am able to make this distinction because I indeed pledged to become a member of my organization. I learned things about myself that I very well may have never learned or maybe not as early in my life. I created life long bonds with people who witnessed and supported me in my times of strength and weakness. I was taught life lessons and most importantly, I was taught even more information about my organization. Information that reaffirmed my desire to become a member in the first place. I worked to become a member of my organization. I have experiences that will forever bond me to my organizations and my chapter. Memories that I can reflect upon through my lifetime commitment to my organization. I was never forced to do any of the things noted in this article because I was not hazed. My pledge process was physically and mentally taxing. I was not abused, disrespected or forced to do anything. The most important ties that bind me to my organization did not take place in a classroom. The activities in that classroom did teach me the core values of my organization which I reflect upon each day as I strive to be a better person. I hate that the Divine Nine is being tarnished by acts such as these. I am by no means "paper", but my life was never put in danger. Chapter members who engage in these life threatening behaviors, in my opinion, are seeking to prove themselves. They are assuming what a "real" process is and because they lack relationships with prophytes who can pass true tradition down, they are left to create what they think is a process. The forbidden fruit of pledging should be honored and upheld. Hazing indeed is illegal and pointless.

  • CJZ:

Well since it seems like most of you all are fairly older than me…let me tell u what’s really going on….(generation x trying to pledge generation video game/skinny jeans…spoiled brats with no home training). As an 80's baby…which makes me 26…I have pledged…from both sides. I have pledged men (b/c I am a sweetheart and a zeta….as well as women). And frankly folks…(this new type of) kids just want to wear t-shirts. They barley want to make the grades….and damn sure don’t want to do any community service. These kids are just as sorry as these teachers who past them along; and the parent or in few case the parents who made them. What I read above was light…because honestly…WOOD is the worst! So if all I had to do was to eat cat food….plz…pass me the kitty crunch. lol For the Que with the "cat" and the "lukewarm" ….don't get mad cause people pillow talking. lol U know how that goes…and u know what that means. But can I just say this without u getting upset….they know nothing about blood, sweat, and tears. Hell I cried more for Zeta after I crossed. They nothing about history and what it took for our organizations to be what they r…only thing they want to do is hop zphi ski wee…and talk about how cold or smooth they r. Ladies and gents….it’s the times that we r living in. I know every situation is different…But for anyone who still thinks it’s cool to pledge….bite ur tongue and be humble. Bc those days r over. As an adp…I never gave wood…cause I got so many as whippings as a child…it didn’t bother me. So work outs was my thing, and just yelling. It worked! lol But honestly…as someone who is younger…yea I cried about it…beat myself…but honestly think about this…..If these kids making babies at twelve…heartlessly killing folks at 14…and never learned the meaning of yes sir…u know they are not going to respect/understand the importance of our organizations….and the damn sure aren’t trying to respect u. So before u think about pledging the Sigma’s who have been slapped with a 97million case. In the words of the aka's…it’s a serious matter! Love to all my greeks….but remember pledged greeks….we are the last of a dying breed!

  • CJZ:

Sorry for the mistakes…but hey I got nails. lol

  • A Kitty but Not Cat:

i agree, hazing is illegal. and i definitely agree with pledged's comment…there is a definite distinction between hazing and pledging. hazing is stupidly mistreating others because you can and because you know they want what you have so you make a fool out of them. pledging, however, serves a higher purpose: teaching and educating the prospects on history, tradition, mental stamina, and brother/sisterhood. if you join the army, do they just say, "oh, great thanks for coming by, here's your tank. go get 'em." no; you get trained, you get toughened up, you get briefed on when to speak and when to be quiet. when someone wants to be a teacher, does the principal say, "ok, here's the classroom, have a great time." no; you get educated, you get certified, you get interned so you can get firsthand experience on how to handle certain situations. so when you want to join an organization, DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU SHOULD JUST GET YOUR LETTERS HANDED TO YOU? no; you should get trained, educated, interned, and toughened up. period.

your process is your process, regardless. and it doesn't matter (to comment made by Me) if you pledge grad or undergrad, you still have a process, and if you can't handle it then YOU SHOULDN'T PLEDGE. i pledged grad to the illustrious zeta phi beta, and my LS's and i PLEDGED, and we knew when we came through that we'd have to undergo something. we chose to go through it so when we put those three letters on, it would be out of pride and accomplishment, not out of paper-signing. we were not hazed, because our big sisters took care of us; yet and still, we were pledged, and the neos i helped to cross were pledged as well. if a person who wants to be a part of an organization, learn the difference between hazing and pledging before you get on line. and to those who take on a line, through all the precursory events and activities you hold to differentiate the strong and the weak, please decide who is really mentally, physically, emotionally, and psychologically ready and capable, as well as those who are mature enough to go through something.

    STOP HAZING. START PLEDGING.

  • John:

People should not complain about it because although every frat and soro has a anti-hazing policy, when you step in and say I wanna be apart of your organization you know it not gonna be an easy run or everybody would do it. So I suggest to people out there thinking of pledging if you want to pledge just be ready for everything and be prepared to be challenged. Because nothing you want in life comes easy.
