Here’s a small sampling of what some readers have had to say. The names and any other identifying information have rightfully been removed for obvious reasons. “Church folk” are some of the worst folk when it comes to retribution, so Mo’Kelly will be sure not to put anyone in harm’s way simply because of an email. (That is, unless your name is El DeBarge and you email talking crazy. That’ll get you put on blast.)
Anyhow, to the mailbag we go. Yes these are absolutely authentic emails and no, I’m not “censoring” anyone. These emails represent the bess cross-section of what has been received.
Thank you for the truth and the encouraging message to the wounded and hurting members of First AME Church. We trusted and we were deceived, bamboozled, and hoodwinked.
Many have wondered why the officers have not spoken out. Some have said that “Hunter will remove me, we saw what he has done to those who have spoken out against him.” But – he doesn’t pay you. He is not your employer and you know he is doing wrong – it is in your face. You can feel the tension each Sunday.
People are afraid. That is the bottom line.
Hunter preached this past Sunday on having people of integrity around you; people who will tell you the truth, people who are not “yes” people. He is such a hypocrite. He only allows those who will skin and grin and say “Yessuh Pastor John.”
He further said one of the most sacrilegious statements ever. He was
explaining that the reason FAME was charging for a concert on Easter Sunday evening was because the FAME had given the members a free concert of Marvin Sapp on Ash Wednesday that cost the church between 27-30 thousand dollars and the upcoming Easter concert with Fred Hammond costs much more than that. He said “We can’t continue to give free concerts, Salvation ain’t free and neither is the concert!”
Every minister who has ever had any type of theological training has learned that salvation is freely available to all through grace. There is nothing any man can do to earn it. His statement was essentially blasphemous, non biblical and anti-Jesus. Where is Jesus Christ in any of this? This is the holiest time of the year and the church is not mentioning Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection. All we heard about was the concert and Fred Hammond. He has lost his perspective as a minister along with his manhood. He should not be allowed to shepherd these people. He is hurting the Body of Christ. He is trying to make us forget about the money he has taken by intoxicating the members with concerts.
He is likewise trying to bedazzle the membership with a new parking lot, new signs, and BULLET PROOF glass and walls in the church office to protect the office staff?
All the programs are gone. All the ministries are gone except for his incorporated marriage seminars by dysfunctional counselors, including Hunter and Huntress; and read some books – that is truly a ministry to our lives.
You are right – they are probably not married, not seen any evidence of that, including no wedding pics.
You have given us an element of courage with your very witty, but very poignant and relevant column.
Thank you again.
We are praying as we have been preyed upon.
No you di-in’t break about 1st Corinthians Chapter 5 on them! I am SCREAMIN over here. It is the same christians (little c) that would have you turn a blind eye to the blatant and flagrant immorality of leadership in the church (not only A.M.E. – I have a good ole fashioned non-denominational mega church story of my own)
Personally, I do believe there needs to be action taken…within the church through counseling, prayer and the authorities if need be; However I DON’T BELIEVE IN THROWING STONES! We need to keep all of our AME churches in prayer.
As a matter of fact, please pray for all churches preaching the true gospel of
Jesus Christ and pray for those who do not…so they can be turned around or shut down. In the name of Jesus, AMEN!!!
In addition, I don’t believe that ministers should be shuffled around within the AME church system. This does not solve the problem. The Catholic church has been doing this for years. Need I say more? Although, I do believe they are trying to make changes.
There truly needs to be changes made. Pointing fingers does not do it. By the way, what’s in your back yard? And, I mean that in the nicest way! I’ve heard some awful things that ministers and church people have done and/or said, but I believe that’s between them and the Lord. On the other hand when it affects the people there needs to be some action taken.
I hope you will write some articles on the good things being done within the AME church. You might want to consider writing about ordinary church people doing extraordinary things inside and outside the church. We need the foundation of the church lifted up, not torn down. Our main concern should be for the people of the church and those who visit and worship with us.
If we can take one thing from President Obama…his mission was to INSPIRE PEOPLE TO MAKE A CHANGE……YES WE CAN! We need to inspire and set an example which exemplifies the teachings of Jesus Christ. We need to do the right thing In the name of Jesus, AMEN!!
Thank you for your objective reporting of events in the AME church. I now understand the prediction of Rev. Frank Reid about the demise of the AME church.
You hit it out of the ball park with Betty Pleasant. Mo, she is lying about Rev. John Hunter. She had the goods on Rev. Hunter, but she refused to write about Hunter. She got some stuff that would blow this man out of the water, but she has an allegiance to him because of “Najee Ali”.
I am glad that you didn’t give up on pressing her. She knows John Hunter is a crook, but now we are going to give you the “smoking gun” that she has had for 3 years. She talked about the AME Justice Group for going after Rev. Hunter, but she didn’t retract the nastiness when it came out that Hunter was a crook.
Mo, this stuff is so deep, but you deserve it man. They lynched Rev. Fred
Murph, but let Hunter ride off into the sunset. How in the Hell can Hunter sit on a committee about Rev. Murph when he is as crooked as they come man. Murph is a Saint compared to John Hunter.
Mo, please stay on Rev. Hunter and Bishop Kirkland. They are throwing up smoke screens when it comes to their corruption, but they want Rev. Murph out yesterday. I believe you will receive many, many awards for your coverage of this story.
I am listening to the part where Betty says she needs “DOCUMENTS” to speak out. She has the Docs on Rev. John Hunter and Denise Brown (not married), but she will not write about them because of Kerman Maddox and Najee Ali. She is very biased when it comes to First AME Church.
(From Mo’Kelly: Background on Kerman Maddox for readers)
Kerman Maddox. From 1984 to 1988, Maddox served as Police Liaison and Special Assistant to Mayor Tom Bradley. He is now a principal in Dakota Communications, a Los Angeles-based public affairs consulting firm, and is a political commentator for KCAL Television.
I can’t wait to converse with you both on the record and off the record. You will have some good stuff man to write and proof to back it up Mo Kelly. Keep up the good work man. You are the Bomb man.
of the Bible they carry but do not read. Preach on, Mo. Preach on.
Hi Mr Mo,
Thank you for the work you are doing to get Hunter removed from FAME. We
have no idea what the procedure is for removing John Hunter, Marilyn Denise Brown, Irma Brown Dillon, Melville Perry, Dessie Roberts, Michael Lewis and Annie Bolden before they completely destroy our church. I have heard that Kirkland will not move him unless the proper procedures are followed no matter what he does.If you know maybe you can post it on your web page. We are not sure if Irma can enter into a confidential agreement about FAME finances because she is a judge. Mark Whitlock is correct when he says FAME’S officers are not qualified.
